5 Ways To Reduce Commercial Energy Costs

Running a company is a complicated endeavor, one which requires a lot of financial investment. Whether you’re a new start-up or have been in the business for ages, you may have looked past some simple money-saving ideas that could keep you focused on keeping your business running smoothly. Reducing energy costs is an easy way to save money, and a small investment can save you thousands over time.

Turn Off Lights And Equipment After Hours

This may seem like an obvious one, but a lot of companies leave their equipment running after hours. If you are open 9-5, turning off computers, printers, and kitchen equipment can save you loads in the long run. It may seem simple to get into work and turn your computer right on, but waiting a few minutes for it to boot up will save your company in the long-run. You can also install motion-sensing lights that will shut off in an area that isn’t in use, so you don’t have to remember to turn the lights on and off in lesser-used areas during the day.

Energy-Efficient Office Equipment

The Energy Star logo on equipment shows that it runs more efficiently and uses less power, so when you’re shopping for products, look for ones with this familiar blue logo (in fact, it’s on the computer I’m using to write this with). Spending the extra cash on energy-efficient equipment now will save your company a huge amount of money over the course of the year. This also goes for kitchen equipment, like the fridge in the break room. A lot of products may also have energy efficient modes, so make the best of the equipment you have and see if it has a low-power mode that would be sufficient.

Alternative Energy Sources

If it is feasible initially, investing in solar panels for your business can save tons of money over time, even if it may be initially a large cost. After a few years, they will pay for themselves, so use this option only if you are somewhat established and you’re sure the investment will be worth it. Once solar panels are installed, they are extremely low-maintenance and last for decades. They can even get you a tax break! If you’re a small start-up that can’t afford solar panels just yet, using natural lighting in the office is just a simple way to use less electricity during the day.

Get An Energy Audit

Bringing in an energy consultant may seem like an unnecessary expense, but they will be able to point out the places where you consume excess energy you might not be able to notice yourself. This may be needed annually, but don’t slack the rest of the year. Which brings us to the last point…

Keep Track Of Usage

Just as important as making these energy consumption changes around your business, tracking the results will help you keep an eye on what is working and what isn’t. One easy way is if your energy company provides utility bill management software to track your expenses to make sure your new changes are working for you so you can adjust accordingly. This will help you see what areas still need improvement and where you can step up your energy-saving game.
