Everything Amazon Sellers Need to Know About Filing Taxes

During the last decades, the world has been transferring real-life activities to digital ones. Hence, the extreme growth of e-commercial operations is a predictable process. Today, we can buy everything we want in two-three clicks, including food, clothes, and computers, as well as construction materials, furniture, and cars with additional accessories. The apparent leader of the global online trading of goods and services is Amazon.

The platform started as an online bookseller, but now, it seems to be the most expensive company in the world. Amazon operates on the Internet.  During the pandemic of Covid-19, thousands of new retailers joined the platform and increased their sales. Your enterprise can also become one of the small or middle businesses that grow with Amazon and enjoy more income. However, do not forget that taxes should be paid for acting as a seller.

For new business people on the platform, it can be hard to deal with tax information for Amazon sellers and puzzle out with reports for Internal Revenue Service. Fortunately, there is user-friendly software by SageSeller to monitor and file everything easily. Let’s first delve into required taxes that should be paid by FBA and then find why you need to use SageSeller’s Profit Dashboard.

Amazon Marketer – Who and How Should Pay Taxes

Right off the bat, we need to say that all businesses earning money through the use of the platform must pay taxes as all other offline sellers with no exceptions. If you break the rules, wait for penalties by IRS. Thus, we need to overview forms for sellers to filing taxes. Luckily, there are only two necessary sheets:

  1. 1099-K form (sales tax and shipping fees)
  2. Schedule C, or Form 1040

The first form from the list will be sent by Amazon if you earned over $20 000 and have done 200 transactions. You can check the required information in the section “Tax Information” at your seller account. Additionally, you can find your previous report in the “Reports” and “Tax Document library” categories. Every seller on Amazon must examine the 1099-K form and correct it if necessary. Please, always try to avoid financial risks and do not break the law.

Form of Individual Income Tax Return comes in handy to taxpayers who officially run businesses in their states and have business licenses. Some states demand it, while others do not; so, please, check your state regulations about this.

A Few Words About Sales Tax

Sales Tax is collected on sold goods (mainly) that are in the list of non-essential items. This list is different in various states. You should gather this tax when your activity matches 2 key criteria:

  • Sales tax nexus. It means that your business has a shop or any other physical representation somewhere.
  • Product taxability. Some products in some states are not taxable. You need to check information about this individually. Generally, most services are not taxable, while material goods are. You should register and gain a permit in the state where you run a business to collect sale tax. Finally, do not forget to set up an Amazon tool for sale tax collection. To do this, you should go to Seller Central, open “Settings,” choose “Tax Settings” in the dropdown menu, and find “view/edit your tax collection and shipping & handling and gift wrap tax obligations settings.”
