Sheet Metal Stamping Forming Process Advantages And Disadvantages

Every requirement in an industrial setup is unique and there are lots of factors that need to be considering when deciding whether or not a particular process is beneficial or not. There is no blanket rule in deciding whether or not a particular sheet metal stamping design is perfect or there are certain disadvantages to it. There are several processes involved such as the stretch forming, roll forming, stamping, drawing, and so on. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of every process which will help industries to decide on their specific requirements.

1. The process Of Drawing

The process of drawing is used for the production of shallow or deep parts. This approach is used when working with relatively simple shapes. With this process, the advantages are the possibility of high production rates. However, the disadvantages are high equipment and tooling cost throughout the project. So the industry needs to evaluate these factors before they decide on what avenue is perfect for them.

2. Stretch Forming Process

A stretch forming process can be used efficiently when clients are looking for large parts with shallow contours. However, this sheet metal stamping process is only suitable for low quantity production. One of the most negative things that turn off most industries from this approach is the high labor cost. However, depending on the part size the actual cost incurred for tooling and equipment varies.

3. Roll Forming Process

This process of sheet metal stamping design is opted for when there is a requirement for long parts that are needed with complex cross-sections. The benefit is that this process helps to produce a really good surface finish and it is also used when there is a need for high production rates. However, one of the most common drawbacks of this process is high tool costs.

4. The Process Of Metal Stamping

There are a variety of operations included in the process of stamping and some of them are embossing, punching, blanking, flanging, and so on. The process can be used when working with simple or even complex shapes for that matter. This is opted for because the process has a high production rate and a low labor cost as well. The process is apt for large volume production. However, some of them back out from using this process because the tooling and equipment cost can be on the higher side.

5. The Spinning Processes

This process is widely opted for when producing small or large axisymmetric parts. It helps in accomplishing good surface finishing with the product and the tool cost is also low with this process. However, if the operations are not automated then the labor costs can be on a higher side. A customer has to vary these important benefits and also drawbacks if he wants to take an informed call on this procedure. It is really important in this case to take an expert opinion on what will be best and whether the approach is suitable for them.

6. The Rubber Pad Forming Process

There are numerous uses and practical benefits of sheet metal stamping forming process and rubber pad forming is one such benefit. This process is widely used for the efficient drawing and embossing of simple to really complex shapes depending on the project being handled. The process is designed to produce sheet surface that is protected by the rubber membranes. The main selling point for this process is low tooling cost and a high flexibility in operation.

7. Explosive Forming Process

This process is widely used to produce large sheets with very complex shapes but then in most of the projects, the shape is usually axisymmetric. This approach is when the clients are looking for low-cost production project because it includes a high labor cost. On the other hand, the client also has to wait longer because there are long cycle times. The low tooling cost is its main selling point and a feature that makes this process all the more attractive to the clients.

All of the above mentioned and many other processes have their own positives and negatives.  This is the reason why clients need to carefully weigh their options and look for the one that makes practical sense for their upcoming project.

8. Eigen Is An Experienced Partner

Eigen engineering is an experienced partner in sheet metal stamping design. There are numerous industries around the globe that are being serviced by Eigen.
