Tips For Newbies While Buying A Used Car

If you are a newbie, like I was, and planning to be on four wheels with a second-hand purchase, you need to know the essential stuff before even thinking to start a deal. First of all, some significant safety features need to be present always and in better condition, for both new and used cars. These features include:

  • A safety belt
  • Stable controls
  • Airbags
  • Latch safety seat system (for children)

In the present, advanced technological era, side curtain airbags have also become a standard among several new cars. Before going to start a physical inspection of the car you’re interested in buying, check out the registration of the vehicle.

Confirm the name of the seller and the title name; if both are the same, you’re good to go for further inspection. Confirming the car history in this whole process is the most essential step to complete. Here are some important tips for buyers who want to buy a used car.

Get A REVs Check – Car History

Even if you’re buying the car from a car dealer, which ensures authenticity on many levels, you should get a REVs or PPSR check. It is an easy process, which can be done online by entering VIN or Rego number of the car.

The details of the vehicle will be received in a few hours. This is an essential step for buyers who want to spend less and buy a car from private sellers. REVs check will reveal vital data about the vehicle, including:

  • Year, Model, Rego & VIN numbers
  • Previous and current owner (s)
  • Write-off details
  • Stolen record
  • Repairs history
  • Salvage or Rebuild title (considered roadworthy or not by an insurance company)

And much more!

Good Communication With The Seller

A good relationship with the seller will help you out in verifying the actual status of the car. You may ask private sellers about the reason they are selling their car or ask whether there is anything wrong with the mechanics of the vehicle. Developing a relationship will dig out some useful information about the car. Never confirm the deal without seeing the physical condition of the car.

Test Drive

Make a test drive. Until you drive the car by yourself, you will not know the actual condition of the car. If the price and condition of the car suit you, go for it.

Physical Checks

Following are some important tips for checking the car physically:

  • Check the frame for corrosion, cracks, and scratches.
  • Open the bonnet and check the area from broken/cracked/corroded hoses.
  • Tires must be the same and equal in size. Check its tread for straightness.
  • Check lights, horn, indicators, and overall electrical system (battery and wires etc.).
  • Confirm sufficient legroom and headroom.
  • Check the seats for space and comfort (Are the seats easily adjustable).
  • Check brakes for proper function.
  • Check any leakage.
  • Check the air condition, radio, and audio player.

If all’s well, fix the deal, hop in, and go home!
