What do you get when you mix a love of playing Mario games, some insane sketching talent and a dash of dark energy? You get these very creepy cool illustrations. I stared at these for a while just admiring the details. We’ve featured a lot of different Mario artistic interpretations before, but I’ve never seen anything like this.
The artist, Mike Puncekar, not only posts these on his blog, but he also gives some insight into his thought process and what he was doing when he created them. For example, he sketched the Koopa below while he was eating breakfast one day.
He wrote that he “beefed up” the Shy Guy (red ghost) below since they mostly get bullied in Mario. The Porcu-Puffer fish, from the Super Mario world where you jump from dolphin to dolphin, was his quickest drawing even though it’s one of the most detailed. On the day he posted the Whomp King from Mario 64, he also had a goofy revelation about breakfast foods. The Goomba is definitely my favorite. His insight about why he drew spider feet instead of little ball feet was fun to read about. It’s a treat to visit Mike’s website not only to see what he’s drawn next, but also to be entertained by his random thoughts. You can check it out for yourself by visiting Mike Puncekar Illustration.
