Elegant Gown Created From Recycled Plastic Bottles

Back in 2009 when we first started writing about recycled designs, I’ll admit that most of them, although they were all fabulous, looked very homemade if you know what I mean. Now, two years later, the recycled designs we see are very different. Creating things with renewable resources is becoming a big business, and some of the world’s most renowned designers are getting on board.

The stunning dress below is made from recycled plastic bottles. Of course, there is some fancy photography and lighting which enhances the look with that beautiful purple color, but still, the dress itself is magnificent. Designer Michelle Brand made this with 2,220 plastic bottle bases, 6,512 plastic bottle tops and 13,880 tags.

On her website, Michelle says, “I have designed an aesthetic and decorative fabric from which most people in the western world would perceive to be waste or rubbish. The fabric is composed of plastic drink bottle bases, which have been cut, sanded and then tagged together. I love seeing opportunities where most people only see problems.” I have seen Michelle Brand’s designs before, and one of her signatures is a delicate flower with petals created from plastic bottles. She made an iconic cascading chandelier, which looks like a plastic waterfall, from a collection of her plastic bottle flowers. You can check that out at Inhabitat. It’s all just so beautiful!
