Expressive Animals Sculpted From Aluminum Foil

These little aluminum foil animals are so endearing to me. Nowadays, if you decide to take your leftovers home from a restaurant, they most likely get packed up in a small to-go container. Twenty years ago it was very different though. Back then, where I lived, the servers at the restaurants would put the leftovers in a piece of tin foil, and then fold the tin foil so it looked like a swan or some other animal. When I was a little girl, I used to look forward to that each time my family went out to dinner.

Have you ever tried to create an aluminum foil animal before? It’s not easy. I’ve tried it several times over the years, and it’s very tricky. Tin foil, like paper, tends to breakdown if you manipulate it too much. It just sort of starts to fall apart into little pieces. That obviously doesn’t happen when artist Dean Millien makes his foil animals because as you can see, they are fabulous!

Each one of these animals has so much personality. The alligator even looks like he’s smiling. I wonder how much aluminum foil Dean used for each one, and how long it took him to make them. These fun animals are on display at the LAND Studio & Gallery in Brooklyn, which is a creative program that showcases art created by adults with developmental disabilities.
