Art Of Ironing: Famous Portraits Made With A Bed Sheet & A Hot Iron

Whaaat? When I use an iron, it takes all my concentration just to get the wrinkles out of a shirt correctly. I can’t imagine ironing famous portraits into a bed sheet. Although this is very interesting to look at, and I’m sure it takes a lot of skill, there’s also a degree of WTFness to it all. These are actually called iron paintings, and they are part of a brilliant ad campaign for a new iron and steamer by Philips.

This creative ad campaign was conceived by ad studio DDB Moscow. In the commercial (see the video below), you’ll see artist Mehmet Ali Yusal first molding and folding the bed sheets into the shapes of famous portraits, then using the iron to get everything just right, and finally using the steamer to give the portrait a recognizable, polished finishing touch. He recreated famous portraits from Vincent van Gogh, Rembrandt and more.

This short commercial obviously doesn’t reveal how long it took to create these, which I wish I knew. My guess is that each one of these portraits took a couple hours to complete, which I’m sure was totally worth it for this memorable ad campaign. This iron art ad won a much-deserved award at the recent Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. We’ve seen famous portraits created from just about everything, so I suppose it makes sense that they could be ironed too! I mean, ironing portraits is no stranger than creating them from old keyboard keys, matchsticks or carved books. The next time you are sitting around your bedroom thinking you don’t have anything to create art with, think again. You can make it from anything – even the white sheet off your bed and a hot iron.
