So what would you do if you wanted to run a high-end video card that could handle the demands of Adobe After Effects, but you didn’t have $2,500 to spend on a Mac Pro?
Well, if you don’t mind having the ugliest computer in the office, you could build a Hackintosh in a cardboard box, like these guys did, for about $900.
If you are unfamiliar with Hackintosh.com, it’s a snazzy little site that provides links that allow you to load MacIntosh OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on plain old PC hardware. So who exactly built this box of beauty? It was the Kalvin, a.k.a. office brainiac, over at One Block Off the Grid. He built this in the same box that the parts were shipped in. I love it! Of course, the cost of the labor to put this together is not included in the total cost listed here. Also, keep in mind; if you do this, you might (you will) violate Apple’s End User License Agreement for Mac OSX (Duh!).
If you would like to try this yourself and save a few bucks in the meantime, you can go here to get the complete detailed instructions including photographs. Thanks for the geektastic inspiration guys!
