I’ve seen a lot of creative umbrella designs over the years, but I’ve never seen one that looks like a head of lettuce before. I’m a huge lettuce fan, so this is right up my alley. I like old fashioned iceberg lettuce, not that fancy mixed greens stuff. I could munch on it all day, and just looking at it makes me feel good. I never thought I could carry around a fake head of lettuce that doubles as an umbrella though. This was just too cute not to share with you.
This very creative head of lettuce, or umbrella, depending on how you look at it, is called the Vegetabrella. Designer Yurie Mano made this out of 100% polyester, and the color even changes from green to greenish-yellow when it’s opened up.
As you can see, it has the standard green wrinkles in the leaves and the supermarket tie thingie that goes around it. I wonder what inspired Yurie to create a umbrella that looks like a crispy, fresh head of lettuce. That may be a question we never know the answer to. The last time I wrote about a head of lettuce was about a year ago. It was in an article about how scientists can grow them now without sunlight (in a vending machine). As it turns out, I suppose lettuce can be more than meets the eye.
The Vegetabrella is sold by Tokyo Noble which is a Japanese company that specializes in manufacturing specially designed umbrellas. Apparently they have hundreds of options available. The Vegetabrella lettuce head umbrella comes packaged in a brown gift box that looks like a real box lettuce would be stored in. They call it a salad design. How cute! It sells for just under $60. You can pick one up at Tokyo Noble or at Anything From Japan. This would make me look forward to the next rainy day!
