I love it when I see schools and universities go out of their way to make learning fun and interactive for their students. Sometimes this happens in ways that involve technology. For example, the University of Groningen in the Netherlands recently created the world’s largest touchscreen (for very little money) to teach their students more about interaction methods with touchscreens.
However, schools don’t have to get fancy to make learning fun. Sometimes it’s just a simple idea or technique. I remember in high school I dropped my art class because it was so boring, and I took an advanced calculus class in its place. The teacher in the math class went out of her way to make it fun and exciting.
It seems as though the students in an art class called Special Topics in Surface Design at the University of Washington are having a lot of fun in their class too. According to the teacher, Cabeen, “The class was structured to provide students with an opportunity to grapple with basic fiber art ideas in a public setting. I wanted to do something beyond the classroom, something large scale.”
Thanks to the students, the brown mailboxes all over campus are decorated with their creative designs. 19 students broke off into five groups to take on the task of beautifying the mailboxes. The art professor goes on to say, “The students have been excited because their work is out in public, and I think they recognize that as both a privilege and a responsibility.” I just think this is so cool! Ya’ll did a fantastic job! Thank you to my friend @terrinakamura for letting me know about this story.
