Cinco de Mayo will be here in a few days, and people all over the world will celebrate this Mexican holiday. When I think of Cinco de Mayo, I think of balloons, streamers, dancing, music, piñatas and lots and lots of Mexican beer. If you are looking for a creative way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in your own kitchen, these cookies might do the trick.
These are piñata cookies, and just like a traditional piñata, they come with a candy surprise inside. By using different colored dough, like in this example, you can really make some festive cookies, and when your guests bite into the center, they’ll be in for a big treat.
These don’t look very complicated to make, and to me they are more like individual cakes than cookies since you have to layer three on top of each other to make each cookie. As you can guess, the middle layer has a little hole in it, which is where you can stuff the M&Ms, or whatever candies you’d like to put in your cookies. The layers are all attached by using icing of course. You can click over to She Knows Food & Recipes for the exact recipe and tutorial. You can also check out Piñata Cookies Tutorial for a slideshow with a lot more pictures. If you want to impress your friends even more on Cinco de Mayo, walk around serving salsa out of your hat that evening. You can learn how to do that on For Really Hungry Geeks: Behold The Salsa Hat.
