Recycling: Old Plastic Toys Get A New Life As A Dog

If you have young children, you probably know what it’s like to have itty-bitty toys all around your house. Whether it’s little plastic numbers, pieces of broken figures or used crayons, that stuff just seems to accumulate everywhere. My son, who is ten years old, has gotten to the age where he is more interested in video games, computers and skateboarding, so I don’t have very much of that little stuff laying around anymore, but when he was young, those toys covered his bedroom floor.

Since we can’t really give those small things to charity, what do we do with them? Artist Robert Bradford had a great idea to solve this dilemma in his house. He recycles old plastic small toys into very interesting dog sculptures.

He does this by screwing each piece of plastic onto a wooden shape. He says it’s harder than it looks, and one sculpture can take up to 3,000 pieces of plastic. People even hire Robert to create these dogs to look like their own pets. He uses plastic clothespins to get a “shaggy” look. What a nice way to give new life to these old toys that might have otherwise gotten thrown away. Obviously it’s so much better for our environment too. When we stop to realize that every single piece of plastic ever produced is still on the planet today, we can truly realize the significance of recycling, and this is just one of many ways to do that.
