Spectacular Sea Salt Formations From The Lowest Place On Earth

I saw these absolutely stunning natural tapestries on BoingBoing a few days ago, and since I’ve thought about them several times since then, I wanted to share them with you today. I’ve traveled a lot around the world, but I don’t know much about the Israel or the Palestine area. I should ask my Twitter friend Hillel about it since he lives between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

These are natural salt formations in the Dead Sea. The photographs were taken from an aerial view which really illustrates their beauty and detail. They almost look like they could be tiny bacteria in a science lab. The Dead Sea is much saltier than the ocean, and since it’s 423 meters below sea level, it is the lowest place on the planet.

Apparently this is a very popular tourist attraction, and over a million people visit this area each year. Nature creates so many incredibly gorgeous art displays. This reminds me a little of the natural glass shard beach, which to this day, blows my mind.
