The Life Of A Designer [Video]

If you have spent some time trying to make it as a freelance designer, you know how difficult it can be to achieve the goals that you set up for yourself. Not only is creativity the main part of it, but without it, you probably won’t move an inch. However, as if that wasn’t enough, you have probably been bombarded with rejection which took you back to square one. Every freelance designer experiences this so you should not get discouraged thinking it’s just you. The constant injection of creativity speed bumps can sometimes be too much to bear, and they might actually prevent you from reaching your full potential. A good mindset to have at this stage of your career is just to remember to keep working it, even though everything seems boring and unattainable.

Design is not a factory, even though every frickin client thinks it is. They simply don’t understand the work and thought process that goes into it all. The energy you spend on small details will most likely never be recognized, and you are left cheering yourself on as a one man parade trying to keep the momentum up. Many times it’s not easy to keep going, but not many people have succeeded by accident.

Success takes work, and the sooner we realize that, the sooner we will hit the mark for what mindset we need to put ourselves in to get there. I have to admit that this video, created by Sara Shin, is pretty much as close to reality as you could possibly get. I am sure you will keep nodding throughout the video thinking this is EXACTLY how it all goes down. Just keep up the great work and morale, and you will find that things will soon feel quite normal, even though these “events” will happen over and over again. It’s just how it all works. Welcome to the world of freelance design. Jokes aside, it’s by bettering our skills and craft that we’ll eliminate at least some of these events. Consider this the pep talk of the day.
