Wanna Be Cool? – Drink Your Water Out of a Box

We all know the downfalls of drinking bottled water, right? I’m not going to go into any of those, but if you would like to learn more about that, you can read this article published last month on the Mother Nature Network website: 5 reasons not to drink bottled water

It’s been a little over a year since Kevin Hockin and Benjamin Gott created a new product, boxed water, and I thought it was due time to write about it on Bit Rebels. The company, Boxed Water Is Better, offers an innovative, earth-friendlier alternative.

According to the website, “We started with the simple idea of creating a new bottled water brand that is kinder to the environment and gives back a bit – we found that it shouldn’t be bottled at all, but instead, boxed. So we looked to the past for inspiration in the century old beverage container and decided to keep things simple, sustainable, and beautiful.”

They ship empty recyclable boxes (the water containers) directly to the water source, which keeps the pollution to a minimum. The actual box itself is created 85% from trees. And to give back, the company donates 20% of all profits to world water relief (10%) and tree reforestation organizations (10%).

This alternative way to package and distribute water actually reduces the carbon footprint by 80%, which is huge. Currently only 14% of plastic water bottles are recycled.

A lot of people believe this whole concept is a complete waste of time and just another marketing gimmick to make us spend money on something we don’t need and to make us feel better about our poor decisions. After all, we could all just drink our water from the tap, right?

However, you can’t overlook that as consumers we like to purchase our water in prepackaged containers, just like we buy our soda pop and fruit juice. Purchasing water has become a staple for those of us on the go. Since that is what the consumer obviously wants, I think this solution is a good fit, for now. This company definitely gets an A for effort. To learn more details about this process, like where the water comes from and how the forests are maintained, check out the company website here.
