I remember back about a decade ago when doing breast self-examinations was still kind of skeevie. Times have changed a lot, and for the better. Now it’s not only widely accepted, it’s truly mandatory to catch the bad stuff quickly and safely. I love this ad campaign that makes those self-exams geeky and fun. Leave it to Wonder Woman, Catwoman, She-Hulk and Storm to make checking for lumps cool.
These great illustrations were created by Maisa Chaves for DDB Mozambique. Of course, their purpose is to raise awareness about the importance of regular breast exams. The text on the ads, which is hard to see in these images, reads “Nobody’s immune to breast cancer. When we talk about breast cancer, there’s no women or superwomen. Everybody has to do the self-examination monthly. Fight with us against this enemy and, when in doubt, talk to your doctor.”
I appreciate this campaign very much, and I hope it will encourage some of our readers to do a self-examination today if they haven’t done one recently. The only criticism I have of this is that once again, it’s a campaign with all Caucasian women. Breast cancer affects women all over the world, and I wish there was a little more diversity with that regard. Overall though, anything that successfully raises awareness about this topic is brilliant in my opinion.
