Technology Revolutionizing The Entertainment Industry

Human beings have an innate thirst for knowledge and a drive to progress, and this is never more evident than in the advancement of technology.

From the creation of the first desktop computers in the 1960s, to today’s smartphones which are essentially mini-computers fitting in the palm of a hand, society has developed in ways beyond the imagination of developers and researchers from decades past.

Advancing technology has had an impact on multiple industries, not least of which is the entertainment sphere. With the ultimate aim of making consumers’ lives easier, technology has transformed the way we spend our leisure time and given us endless possibilities.

Which Sections Of The Leisure Industry Have Been Impacted By Technology?

In truth, it is difficult to identify aspects of the industry which have not adapted to the relentless growth of technology. Entertainment has changed beyond recognition with technological development, and we now have limitless ways to enjoy our leisure time.

Listening To Music

The ways in which we listen to music have changed immeasurably over the decades. Vinyl records became popular in the 1940s and continued to do well up to the present day, although their popularity did start to wane with the advent of cassette tapes in the 1960s.

The launch of cassette tapes led to a key development in our music consumption. Finally, listening to music did not have to remain in the house or on the radio; consumers were able to listen to their music of choice on the go with the use of Walkmans.

Car manufacturers further cemented the cassette tape’s place in history by installing cassette tape players in their vehicles.

The 1980s saw the birth of the CD, knocking the cassette tape off its perch with superior music quality, followed by MP3s and the game-changer, the Apple iPod. Today’s technology goes even further and allows us to stream and download music digitally.

Streaming online has become the medium of choice, with over 616 million people worldwide using streaming services to listen to music, using this freedom to listen to new artists and albums without buying it in a physical format.

Betting And Gaming

Betting is one of the world’s oldest forms of entertainment, but it could not be undertaken unless the participants were physically at the racecourse or sports venue.

Betting was transformed with the advent of betting shops in the 1960s, allowing customers to go and place bets on sports events in all manner of locations.

While these shops still have a place in today’s society, the meteoric growth of online betting has offered yet another level of accessibility, giving consumers the ability to place bets on a range of sports at the touch of a button, 24 hours a day.

Modern gaming, too, has changed beyond recognition over the decades. The release of the very first video game consoles in the 1970s, the Odyssey and the Atari, began a fascination with gaming which exists to this day – even though the platforms we now use look incredibly different.

Much like the evolution of listening to music, developers sought to give gamers the ability to play games whilst out and about.

The 1980s saw the launch of Nintendo’s hugely popular Gameboy and brought a new dimension to video games.

While the PlayStation and Xbox dominate the market for at-home video game consoles, the rapid evolution of mobile technology has reeled in gamers with a huge amount of choice and high-quality graphics.

With mobile connectivity improving rapidly, gamers can now access a vast array of gaming platforms across multiple devices, from popular social media games such as Candy Crush to thrilling online slots Canada, with titles like Buggy Bonus, Calico Jack, Cake Valley, and more.

Reading

As more aspects of everyday life move towards digitalisation, avid readers have also been pulled along for the ride. Physical paperbacks or hardbacks take up a fair amount of space and for those who love reading, a physical book collection may well get out of control.

Libraries can offer an alternative option, although bookworms may prefer to keep their favourite tomes.

The 2000s saw the launch of e-readers with the most famous of them released in 2007 – the Kindle, which dominates the e-reader market at around 72%.

Capable of storing thousands of books and often at a snip of the price of the physical version, e-readers have forever altered the way we read.

For those who like to read on holiday, purchasing two or three books on a Kindle beforehand means they won’t be taking up valuable space in a suitcase.

The ease and convenience of a tablet for reading is perfect for the commute or sitting in a waiting room before an appointment, and while some will forever appreciate turning the pages of a traditional paperback, e-readers constitute a growing slice of the book market.

Cutting Edge Technology Will Continue To Push The Boundaries

The amazing leaps forward in technology have transformed the entertainment industry and will continue to do so, especially as tech giants are now exploring the capabilities of Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence.

Users can now take advantage of the digital transformation of entertainment; able to listen to music, read books and play games on the go, people have a world of opportunity at their fingertips.

Technology will continue to evolve as researchers and developers seek to provide a superior user experience, allowing consumers to take advantage of a constantly changing landscape.
