Joey Chestnut describes himself as a “professional eater.” After all, you don’t become the new hot dog eating world record holder by chance! It takes a lot of hard work and practice.
Joey snagged the world record at the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. He successfully crammed 68 hot dogs and 68 hot dog buns down this throat in only 10 minutes. He won (or should I say earned) $20,000 for this feat.
Back in 1916, when Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest began, the winner only ate 13 hot dogs in 10 minutes, so the hot dog eating skills in Coney Island are definitely improving over the years.
People are calling this an athletic performance, and after watching this video, I agree. He had to actually prime his body to be able to endure that many hot dogs that quickly.
According to Wikipedia, “Chestnut trains by fasting and by stretching his stomach with milk, water, and protein supplements. Three days before winning a chicken-eating contest in Boston, in November 2005, Chestnut drank gallons of water in under one minute and ate Buffalo wings to get his stomach accustomed to them.”
Joey Chestnut also holds world records in contests involving these foods:
Macaroni and Cheese
Waffles
Jalapeno Poppers
Pork Ribs
Steak
Pulled Pork
Asparagus
Chicken Wings
Hamburgers
Matzo Balls
Kolaches
It’s hard to believe he only weighs 218 pounds!
