DO you think you could improve the way New York City operates? If you develop a web or mobile app that improves the transparency, accessibility, or accountability of the city you could score yourself $20,000!
New York recently launched NYC Apps, a public calling for entries (Web and mobile apps) that tap into the massive amounts of public data that are nearly hidden from most. Everything from business inspections, traffic updates and even city budgets.
The $20k in prizes will be awarded to individuals with the best app in various categories. Grand prize gets a check for $5000 bucks and dinner with Mayor Bloomberg himself.
I think we will see a number of other major cities follow suit. Mobile applications have exploded in the past year with the success of Apple’s iPhone making just about everything easier and more accessible from the palm of your own hand.
So developers, rush on over to NYC BIG APPS and get going! Don’t forget if you win, tell Mr. Bloomberg how much you like BitRebels.com…
