Geek Olympic Events: If Geeks Were Competing In London

If you have been watching the Olympics, you know it’s been an exciting ride so far. Michael Phelps is always exciting to watch of course, and it was great to see Japan win the gold for a sport they invented. It’s also fun to see so many videos posted to YouTube and then immediately removed with a message that reads “This video contains content from International Olympic Committee, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.” Dang, they are quick! I’ve found that when I talk to my geek friends about the Olympics, they are either really into it, or they aren’t watching it at all. There isn’t much middle ground.

I was glad when I saw my Twitter friend @TheDudeDean tweet this yesterday because it gave me a good laugh. I thought it would be fun to share it with you so you can start your day with a smile. What if there were Olympic games just for geeks? What kind of competitions would there be? I bet the Geek Olympics would attract as much of a crowd as the Olympics games going on now in London.

According to The Joy of Tech and this cartoon by Nitrozac and Snaggy, there would be all kinds of very relevant geek games. I know I could make the U.S. Olympic team to compete in the swipe/pinch/zoom triathlon. As a matter of fact, I can think of a lot more sports than just these. There could competitions for making the best papercraft Star Trek character, the biggest or the smallest Lego build, a lightsaber duel, a Rubik’s cube speed competition, and maybe even a Minecraft, Diablo 3 and cosplay competition of some sort. Getting into the geek hall of fame for one of these Geek Olympic games would definitely earn you some geek cred, don’t you think? I’ve rambled on long enough. I hope you enjoy this little comic.
