How to Effectively w00t

If you are on Twitter, are a geek, a gamer, or following any of us Rebels, you have heard and probably even used the word “w00t!” Its a term that is Twittered from the Philippines to Hollywood.

So, what the heck is a w00t?

“Woot” is a term used by many online junkies as a quick way to express “like” or “awesomeness” in a statement or phrase.  (my own definition)

Where did “woot” originate? How did such a silly term get so popular?

OK, all of you nerdy readers put your hands down. You would not have clicked on this article if you had any doubt in your mind what “woot” meant or how to use it. Let me give you its definition and origin from an undisputed quality online resource…

According to Urban Dictionary:

Woot originated as a hacker term for root (or administrative) access to a computer. However, with the term as coincides with the gamer term, “w00t”.

“w00t” was originally an truncated expression common among players of Dungeons and Dragons tabletop role-playing game for “Wow, loot!” Thus the term passed into the net-culture where it thrived in video game communities and lost its original meaning and is used simply as a term of excitement.

Other suggested origins: We Owned the Other Team, Wonderful Loot, Waste of Our Time or Way Out of Topic.

We’ll let the techies and gamers fight over the creation of the term. What is more important is how “woot” is used amongst us social butterflies (or uber-geeks if you prefer).

There is nothing like a good W00t.

W00t is a four letter word that calls silent-celebration to anything we feel needs a little noise. In these days of so much to say in so little characters, “woot” is the ever-excepted term I think we can all agree on.
