How To: Start a Flash Mob

Did you know that the first recorded flash mob happened in Manhattan in the rug department of Macy’s in 2003? Flash mobs have come a long way since then. We’ve all seen the videos and watched in awe as some of these fabulous events unfold.

According to https://www.brandchannel.com:
“The psychology behind why flash mobs work speaks to an individual’s inherent need to create and connect. I think people are excited about creating their own entertainment.”

Have you ever thought about organizing your own flash mob? Here are the steps:

  1. Have a kick ass, original idea. Nobody will show up if it’s not super fun. Make it a strange kind of fun if possible, something completely absurd in a cool kind of way. The purpose of the flash mob should be to have a good time and the idea should be simple.
  2. Spread the word. There is an additional element of cool added to your flash mob if nobody knows who the originator is. Set up an email address just for this event and be mysterious. People will be intrigued. Spread the word to as many people as you can. Timing is very important. Be clear about where they should go at exactly what time. If you have more time to prepare, you can even start a flash mob group online so you have an even larger pool of people to contact.
  3. Once your flash mob starts, get out of the way. You’ve done your part, now let it develop on its own. Flash mobs encourage creativity in the participants and in the people watching. Don’t be rigid or bossy, just let it become what it will.
  4. From what I’ve read, it may take a lot of practice to become a flash mob YouTube sensation. Here is one very funny post about a man’s failed flash mob attempt: https://open.salon.com/blog

Organizing a successful flash mob and posting it on YouTube is on my bucket list. I want to make it something that will inspire people to want to make the world a better place. When I figure out the details, I will invite you! :)

This video below is my favorite flash mob of all time. Believe it or not, this was only rehearsed two times before they performed!

This flash mob is more the ridiculous humor I was talking about. How fun!
