I was just talking to a friend of mine at Apple yesterday, and he asked me what ear I put my iPhone up to when I answer it. He went on to explain that if you put your iPhone up to your left ear, you are mostly right-brained. If you put your iPhone up to your right ear, you are mostly left-brained. He told me that it has something to do with where hearing is located in the brain. I think this was even on Yahoo news this week. I put my iPhone up to my left ear, but the whole thing sounds like rubbish to me.
I remember two years ago, I wrote this article about right brains vs. left brains, and I put the classic spinning dancer video in there. I can make the dancing girl change directions, just like many people, with my mind. However, as many scientists have pointed out, that test is simply an optical illusion. It turns out, that doesn’t really prove anything (see here and here).
Regardless of all that, this new Panic Room design reminds me of what the inside of our brains might look like when the right side and the left side are each struggling for control. One side of this room is completely white. The other side is colored with stunning graffiti art. It’s split straight down the middle, and whatever is in the path of the split gets to be half colored and half white. It was designed by artist Tilt for one of the rooms in the Au Vieux Panier hotel in Marseille, France. Looking at this hurts my brain a little, and I love it. If you had to choose one side or the other, which one would win? The colors would win for me, no question about it, but I still like both.
