I remember Tetris in the arcades in the ’80s. It was always next to Pac-Man, Galaga, Space Invaders, Arkanoid and the other classics. Tetris was a little different though, and it attracted a different kind of player. Tetris was known back then as being the video game for the “smart kids,” and I didn’t play it as much as the others. It was a logical decision for me. I could either play a quarter for two minutes on Tetris, or play for 30 minutes on just about any other game in the arcade.
Nowadays people play a different kind of Tetris, and Richard wrote about it a while back. It’s called Portal Tetris and it’s a mashup of, well, Portal and Tetris. Even with all my Tetris memories, I never thought I’d see the day when we would see Tetris art. This is mind blowing to me. YouTube user Shuey187 has an entire collection of this Tetris art on his channel. In this particular one, he used this Luigi image as a reference, he turned the gravity off, and he started building. Since there are only six pieces to work with, that means there was only six color choices (the square couldn’t be used). On YouTube he says he did his best with the colors that were available.
The whole key with this is careful planning and turning the gravity off, otherwise this would be close to impossible. Wow, I can’t even imagine the patience required to pull this off. Hmm… I think I’ll just stick to having fun with my Tetris sticky notes.
