As we get more and more used to the technologies found and dreamed up for movies, they no longer raises eyebrows when they actually become a reality. Take the Minority Report screen for example. When that movie was released, we all wanted to be able to work a screen just like it with gestures, solely by the movement of our hands. A few years later, we saw several solutions that work in the exact same manner on their way to being commercialized. Where is the limit for what we can actually create?
Well, the lightsabre seems to be out of our league for at least a few hundred years. However, what about the portal in Stargate? As a matter of fact, it turns out that a father and son from Australia actually took the challenge and built a prototype of it. Now I know there will be a million questions following that sentence, so I might as well answer the most important one. Does it really work? That really depends on how you look at it.
The answer is both yes and no. The inner ring with the glyphs on it is spinning, and it looks quite real. Will it open a portal to a distant planet? Of course not. That would be a leap too far for us at this point and would most likely cause panic and chaos here on planet earth. However, it is actually a really cool and semi-functional working portal. If you look at the video, it’s actually working. So the answer for that particular question is… yes, it works… in movie land.
