10 Financial Lessons Learned From Napkin Sketches

Have you ever been so bored in a restaurant or at a bar that you started doodling on a napkin? I’ve done it many times, but usually my napkin sketches don’t amount to much more than a dog or a smiley face. I’ve certainly never sketched anything important on them like how to save money.

Carl Richards, whose name you may recognize from the New York Times, is a financial planner and the blogger behind Behavior Gap. He doodles financial lessons that we can all learn from on his beverage napkins. Carl wrote, “Making good financial decisions requires that we consider the implications of those decision within the context of our lives.

In other words, what might be best for you and best for me could be completely different, and those differences are hard to illustrate in a spreadsheet. I guess a napkin is much easier, and simpler. There are about 90 napkin sketches in all, and I’ve only featured 10 of them here. Each sketch is downloadable, and many of them come with an entire text lesson which explains it in detail. You can view the entire collection on Behavior Gap. I love these!
