3 Long Distance Moving Mistakes To Avoid

Moving is stressful enough, but a long-distance move can be a nightmare if you fail to plan it properly. Whether you’re moving one state over or across the country, you’ll want to avoid making these three mistakes.

1. Not Giving Yourself Enough Time To Pack

It’s easy to underestimate how much time it takes to pack. There will inevitably be areas you thought would take just 15-20 minutes to pack, but wind up taking hours. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to pack.

If you’re rushing to get everything into boxes and onto the truck at the last minute, it will only add to the stress of the move. And because this is a long-distance move, you won’t be able to go back to your home to get anything you may have left behind. As a general rule of thumb, here’s how long it takes to pack up a home:

  • Studio: 2 days
  • 2-bedroom: 3 days
  • 3-bedroom: 5 days

Plan on adding a day if you have a lot of fragile items that need to be carefully wrapped up and stored.

2. Not Hiring A Professional To Help

Many people think that they can make a long-distance move on their own, but they forget how exhausting and stressful the process can be. Remember that the move is long-distance, so you probably won’t be able to round up your friends to help with the move. In most cases, it’s best to hire long distance movers who will take care of the loading, driving, and unloading.

You can even pay them to pack up your belongings if you want. Yes, it costs money to hire movers, but it is worth the cost. If you don’t have a lot of items to bring with you a DIY move may be fine. But if you have a truck-full of heavy belongings and furniture, it’s best to hire a professional.

3. Forgetting To Pack An Overnight Bag

Long-distance moves are unpredictable. The further the move, the higher the risk of something causing a delay. It’s not uncommon for families to have to settle into their new home for a few days – or a week – before their items are delivered. Make sure that you’re prepared for the unexpected. Pack a weekend bag to make sure that you have everything you need, including:

  • Clothing
  • Pajamas
  • Flashlights
  • Toiletries
  • Personal care items

If you arrive with no personal belongings at all, you could find yourself having to spend money on the essentials you forgot to pack.
