Just because we don’t know how long the COVID-19 pandemic will last doesn’t mean we need to abandon all hope. Being on lockdown or self-isolating is daunting, but there are several ways to stay productive and healthy. And, as you’ll see, a few simple changes can have a hugely beneficial impact whether you’re working from home, a key worker, with family, or on your own.
Sounds simple enough, but sticking to a schedule is the most crucial step. As much as we love the freedom of an unrestricted timetable, humans are creatures of habit. If coronavirus lockdown has you working from home, stick to the office hours you’d typically work.
Not only will you find it much easier to get work done, but it means you’ll still have time outside of work to do activities like exercise or relax. By keeping your schedule the same as you would under normal circumstances, it’ll also keep your mind occupied.
The same rules apply if you’re a key worker. Where possible, try to keep your meal times, work shifts, and routine the same. It will pay dividends for your mental and physical health in the long run.
As the saying goes, a tidy home is a tidy mind. This step may be more relevant to people who now find themselves working from home, but it’s still suitable for key workers.
The bottom line is, no matter who you are, we’re all going to be spending more time at home, and that means making some essential changes to prevent cabin fever from setting in.
The first job is to designate different locations for work and recreation. It could just be the corner of a room, but by assigning space dedicated to working, it’ll be easier to focus and more rewarding when you finish.
Next comes splitting up your recreational activities, again, either in separate rooms or different areas. With different areas assigned to various activities, it will feel less like you’re spending your entire life at home—even if that’s the reality.
It’s more important to take time out than ever before. If you’re working from home, don’t be tempted to skip on a lunch break because it’s easier to keep working. Many people find their productivity drops significantly without a proper break from online calls, assignments, or the constant barrage of news updates.
However, if you’re someone who struggles to get going once you’ve taken a long break, try micro-breaks instead. A popular method is to take five minutes after twenty-five minutes of working. You don’t need to do much, but try to get up, walk around, or get a drink in those five minutes to refresh your mind and body.
While it’s highly tempting to opt for takeaway most nights, poor eating habits combined with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle don’t mix well. That doesn’t mean skipping the treats altogether, but don’t abandon your usual eating habits merely because of lockdown.
If, however, getting your usual food items is difficult, supplements, vitamins, and minerals are an excellent way to give your body the boost it’s lacking. In fact, a few drops of CBD oil, a natural supplement derived from hemp, can help keep your body balanced and better prepared to deal with the disruption of self-isolation.
Staying in touch with friends and family is crucial during isolation. Fortunately, this is now easier than ever. Despite new rules on social distancing, thanks to social media, conferencing apps, and video calls, a friendly face is only a few clicks away.
Take the time to check-in or update people on how you are doing. We’re in this together, and if you’re struggling with the stress and worry of lockdown, you’re not alone. Staying connected is one of the best ways to help manage fears and concerns.
