Your home is your castle. It’s where you find time to relax. It’s the place where you raise a family, entertain friends, and create memories. It shouldn’t be a place where you find bugs. Yet, in many cases, insects and pests start to take up residence in our homes. If you aren’t careful, a small problem can get totally out of hand.
If you want to enjoy the safety and serenity of your house, you need to get serious about keeping bugs out. Thankfully, there are a number of proactive things you can do to ward off pesky insects.
Bugs don’t originate from inside your home. They always start outside, penetrate your structure, and then set up camp inside the house. So, if you want to keep bugs out of your house, you need to start with the exterior.
Take a walk around your house and look for problem areas. This includes standing water, firewood piles, anthills, and signs of other nests or holes. If you see trouble spots like these, take the necessary steps to eradicate the problem.
Simply having bugs in your yard doesn’t automatically mean there will be bugs in your house. The bugs have to find a way to invade the home. By sealing off potential entry points, you can greatly reduce the likelihood of an insect problem inside the house.
Popular entry points include gaps around windows and doors, air vents, drains, drywall holes, torn window screens, and open spaces near pipes and vents. The average homeowner can identify and fix these problem areas with nothing more than caulk, weather stripping, and other basic supplies that can be found at a home improvement store.
Most bugs enter the home with the goal of finding food, not shelter. If you can remove the food source, you’ll eliminate the infestation. Unfortunately, this means cleaning problem areas on a continual basis.
“Whether you choose to sweep or vacuum, clean the floor daily,” professional home organizer Sarah Aguirre advises. “Food and residue need to be removed quickly so that bugs won’t be attracted to the mess. Missing a day may be just enough to attract some unwanted visitors to an unintended feast.”
If you already have bugs in the home, it’s important that you correctly identify the insects so that you can use the appropriate deterrent.
While some people find general household insecticides to be effective, most agree that it’s better to use targeted products. For example, if you have a problem with moths, it’s best to use a designated moth killer. If you have a problem with drain flies, it’s best to use a specific drain fly product. This increases your likelihood of success.
Finally, if all else fails and you find yourself with a chronic bug problem that won’t go away, go ahead and call in a pest professional to deal with the issue. It’ll cost you on the front end, but there’s something to be said for doing it right the first time.
There’s nothing normal about sharing your house with bugs. Whether it’s ants, cockroaches, spiders, moths, flies, or some other common household pest, there are proactive steps you can take to keep them out of your house. The key is to take action as soon as possible. Because the longer you wait, the tougher it becomes to evict them.
