Damon Becnel Explains How Building Denser Cities Is Possible

Developers are constantly trying to make cities denser. But what does this mean? And why is it important for developers to know how dense their city is? In this article, Damon Becnel talks about all the different things that developers need to understand to build denser cities. He also discusses some of the benefits and challenges involved with making your city more densely populated.

The Importance Of Density

One of the main reasons to build denser cities is that it’s better for the environment. With more people living in a smaller area, you can help reduce your city’s carbon footprint, impacting climate change. This has the benefit of helping everyone breathe cleaner air and drink clean water! It means there will be less pollution too.

If we were all spread out over larger areas, this would increase our dependence on cars (which isn’t eco-friendly), creating more traffic jams and wasting fuel. Additionally, if every person had their own house or apartment with a garden – imagine how much extra food they’d need to grow themselves…and where they might put any animal farms?!

How Density Affects The Environment

Another great benefit to building denser cities is that it makes public transport more efficient. If people live closer together, they can walk or cycle (eco-friendly) to the station rather than take the car. This will help reduce congestion and clean up our air.

If we all lived in one single huge city – like some ‘mega city’…then there would be fewer cars on the road, making traffic jams a thing of history. There would also be less carbon emission per person too and cleaner water sources for everyone.

The Challenges Involved With Density

As well as bringing benefits though, dense living does have its drawbacks too. For example:- One challenge is that this type of housing tends not to work so well for families. If you live in a small apartment, then it might not have enough space for everyone to have their bedroom – or even a room of their own. It means that children will probably need to share a bunk bed.

Another issue is that denser housing can be more expensive because there isn’t as much land available now (to build houses on). This makes the cost per square meter higher than before and often too high for many people who don’t work full time, as students and pensioners. Not only this but if developers want to make things affordable by building ‘tower blocks’ – they’re faced with another challenge: security.

If we look at what happened during the riots across the UK in 2011, many violent acts took place in tower block developments. This is because it’s easy for criminals to hide from police when they’re on different floors and then escape before anyone catches them! So if you want a safe city that everyone feels comfortable living in – maybe density isn’t always a good thing after all.

Focus On Building Denser Cities And Not Suburbs

Finally, developers need to understand that there is a difference between building suburbs and cities. While one might be more popular than the other, building denser cities will always have its benefits, as we’ve seen throughout this article! So instead of focusing on making things cheaper by creating low-density housing – why not focus all your efforts on finding ways to make high density affordable? This way, you can create beautiful-looking buildings that everyone wants to live in – plus they’ll help reduce carbon emissions too.

What Strategies Can Be Used To Build Denser Cities

When developers are working on building denser cities, they can use two different strategies to make it work. Firstly, you could focus on creating ‘infill developments,’ which means adding extra floors onto existing buildings in high-density areas…and not just making them taller! The other option is to build up rather than out by using the space above shops or roads instead of leaving these spaces empty.

You see, when we look at most major city centers around the world today – they’re already pretty dense with skyscrapers packed tightly together! So by following this approach, new housing would have no choice but to be built vertically, which also helps save the land that would otherwise go unused.

How Other Countries Have Successfully Implemented These Strategies

To get a better idea of how infill developments and building vertically works in practice, we can look at two examples from around the world. In New York, for example, many buildings have been ‘stacked on top of each other – creating high-rise apartments that are perfect for small families! On the other hand, Hong Kong has built up instead of out, which has enabled it to house more than 70,000 people per square kilometer (223/sq mi).

As you can see then – the potential benefits are huge if developers focus on building denser cities. Whether it’s creating an extra floor or adding housing above existing buildings – one thing is for sure, it’s the only way to solve the housing crisis in many countries today.
