Hotel Brochure Pictures vs. The Actual Hotels

It’s been the joke on more sitcoms than I can count, but has it ever actually happened to you? I’m talking about when you see a hotel brochure, you call and book a room, you get there, and you feel like you are in the twilight zone because it looks so different than the pictures on the brochure.

It’s funny for everyone except the people trying to enjoy their vacation. For them, I’m sure it’s an awful realization. It’s only happened to me once. I booked a hotel room in downtown Miami after seeing the beautiful pictures online. When I got there, the hotel was under renovations. Not only did it look like a construction site, the bulldozers kept me awake almost all night. It was a lesson learned.

I got a good giggle when I saw these pictures from Oyster. It’s from a series called Oyster’s Photo Fakeouts. They take photos that hotels use for marketing (whether it’s on a brochure or a travel website), and they compare them to actual photos their members send in when they visit that hotel.

Whether they add a sexy lady in a bikini, Photoshop out the crowds of people or surrounding buildings, add brilliant lighting (inside and outside) and props (flowers, extra pillows, etc..), or crop out things that are important to see, this is all very telling. I have to admit; whoever had to take these real scenes and make them appealing did a very good job. I’m impressed in an odd kind of way. If you would like to view many more photos and find out the names of these hotels, visit Oyster.
