How Americans Feel About The Osama Mission [Infographic]

I remember exactly where I was the morning of September 11, 2001. I was sitting on the floor of my living room with the television on. I was playing with my son who was not quite two years old at the time. These days, I don’t watch TV, but back then; I watched the news in the mornings. I remember when they stopped everything on every channel to play the short video of the first airplane hitting the World Trade Center.

At first, they were saying on the news that it must have been pilot error, a tragic mistake. However, as the events of the morning progressed, and more information came pouring in, it was obvious it was no mistake. I remember at the time they were putting all major metropolitan cities in the United States on high alert. Since my instincts as a mother told me to protect my son, I gathered a few of his things and we left Atlanta for a few days until things calmed down a bit.

I don’t think we’ve ever truly 100% recovered as a nation. It was such a big blow on so many levels, and truly an act of pure evil. Fast forward to last week when Obama announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed. For what it’s worth, I’ve been a little uncomfortable with the chain of events that have occurred since then. I understand that he was a very dangerous person, and I know a lot of lives were destroyed because of what he did; however, seeing images all over the Internet the past week of young children carrying signs that said things like, “Yeah Osama is dead.” was really horrifying to me. Am I the only one who finds this disturbing?

Shouldn’t his death be a time for reflection and a time to think about how we can make our world a better place? Should we be celebrating by dancing in the streets and teaching children to get excited over killing? Is that behavior going to bring any justice to those who lost loved ones that day? Just in the past few days, GOOD and Column Five Media put together this infographic based on information from a USA Today/Gallup poll which asked Americans how they felt about the U.S. mission to kill Osama bin Laden. Some of these answers surprise me, and some don’t. What do you think about it all?
