You take care of your RV roof because it is an essential part of the RV. The roof covers the entire vehicle and protects its interior. Keeping the RV roof in good condition reduces heat buildup and the accumulation of moisture. It lowers the risk of mold growth, cooling and heating costs, and reduces the risk of developing ice dams. Likewise, maintaining the roof ensures the life and integrity of the roof.
The roof of the RV is constantly exposed to sun, wind, and rain. It endures cold and hot weather. Over time, the RV roof will show signs of wear, such as fading or peeling paint. Vinyl and rubber parts may crack or dry out due to UV rays.
Maintaining the roof will extend its life. It is vital to keep it clean, especially when you are not using the RV, to prevent the accumulation and hardening of dirt and debris, development of mold, and other issues.
When an RV roof is well maintained, you are protecting everything that is under it. When there are problems with the roof, such as crack and holes, water, dirt, or melted snow can penetrate the ceiling and eventually create leaks that will damage your RV’s interior. Damage to the interior will be costlier to repair.
The roof of the RV is usually white. When you do not clean it frequently, dirt and other items that fall on it may cause stains that will be difficult to remove, making the roof look grungy. RV roofs are made of metal (aluminum), fiberglass, EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber, or TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin). Each type requires a different type of maintenance, but you can always use mild soap and water to wash the roof. Never use abrasive or harsh cleaners on the roof to prevent its deterioration.
Applying RV roof coating is one way to increase the roof’s protection. Your roof will last longer, ensuring that it is sealed to prevent wind and moisture from reaching the RV’s interior. Likewise, the roof coating provides added protection against UVA and UVB rays, and other elements.
After each use:
If you are using a wet solution to clean the roof, rinse and wipe the RV’s exterior side to remove soap and water residue that can cause streaking.
Inspect the roof for deteriorating sealants. But do check the vehicle’s manual so you’ll know what type of sealant to use. RV roofs are made of different materials, and each one requires a different type of sealant or coating. Check the condition of the sealants around seams and openings on the roof. Loose, aged or cracked sealants can cause leaks.
Periodic inspection is necessary to ensure that your RV roof is in good condition. You can do the maintenance yourself or have a professional do it. What matters most is that the roof is sealed and covered with the right coating to make it last longer.
