How To Keep Coronavirus Out Of Your Home

Coronavirus causes severe respiratory disease in humans, commonly known as SARS. While cases of SARS have dropped off since 2003, the threat of coronavirus infection remains. Learn how a virus is spread, the best preventative steps you can take, and what to do if you’re exposed.

Coronavirus is a member of the Coronaviridae family. Also known as the common cold, it’s spread through the air. It can easily pass from an infected person to other people nearby. Coronavirus is a respiratory illness that can be spread from person to person through close contact or through the air. Coronavirus is different from the one that causes the common cold.

The CDC says “the best way to stay healthy is to wash your hands often with soap and water” and if you are sick with coronavirus, to “cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve (not your hands).”

Since it’s hard to identify coronavirus, the best way to avoid infection is to avoid its sources.

  • Have good ventilation in your home.
  • Wash everything you can with disinfectant to eliminate traces.
  • If you’re around someone who is sick, wear a mask.
  • Immediately isolate ill people and anyone exposed to them.
  • Avoid close contact with ill people.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Disinfect the linens and surfaces of rooms of ill people using a bleach solution.
  • Avoid touching the eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you’re in close contact with ill people, especially those with SARS, or if you experience a fever that lasts longer than 10 days.
  • Wear disposable gloves while cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.

How To Disinfect Surfaces

If someone has been sick with Coronavirus, follow these steps to disinfect surfaces. Vinyl and Plastic: Use a mister of Lysol spray to disinfect surfaces. If you don’t have Lysol, use a mix of bleach and water in a spray bottle. Use a paper towel to wipe surfaces, then throw the towel in the trash.

Wooden Surfaces: Lysol can be used to disinfect wooden surfaces. Use paper towels to wipe surfaces, then throw the paper towels in the trash. Carpet: Lysol can be used to disinfect carpet.

Other Tips For Preventing Coronavirus

If you must shake hands, the CDC suggests “wiping your hand with a hand sanitizer or disposable wipes after you shake hands, especially if you have touched a surface that might be contaminated.

The CDC says “keep your hands and your child’s hands clean” and “wash your hands often with soap and water“. – Washing with soap and water or using a hand sanitizer is not a replacement for hand washing. Do both to be safer.

The CDC says “wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers, before and after having contact with people who are sick, and before you prepare or eat food.” – Use warm water and soap.

Infected people should avoid close contact with others as much as possible. This means staying home from work, school, and public events.

If you have been exposed to someone with respiratory symptoms, you should monitor your temperature and seek medical attention for a fever greater than 100.4°F or a worsening cough after close contact with someone with symptoms.

If you are a health care provider and come in close contact with someone who is sick, you can protect yourself by wearing a mask, gloves, and eyewear or goggles. Avoiding close contact with people who are sick with a respiratory illness can help protect your family and others from the symptoms of the illness.
