How To Find The Right Mattress For Your Sleep Style

You spend a third of your life sleeping. It’s important to make those eight hours count. The right mattress will help you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. The wrong mattress will leave you feeling achy, tired and cranky.

If you’re ready to toss your old mattress, you may be wondering how to buy a new one. What features should you be looking for? Does it really have to be memory foam? Here’s how to find the right mattress for your sleep style.

How Much Support Do You Need?

Along with the cost and quality of the mattress, you need to consider comfort and support. Do you prefer a bed with bounce, or do you need firm support?

Bounce

If you like your mattress to have some bounce, an innerspring mattress may be a good fit for you. Metal coils are typically gauged from 12 to 18, with 18 being the thinnest and most compressible. Heavier individuals tend to prefer thicker coils that offer a little more support.

If you’re worried about movement, mattresses with individually pocketed coils may be a good fit. These coils are covered with fabric, which reduces the ripple effect that occurs when someone moves in the bed.

A Firm Base

Some people prefer a firmer base without much bounce. Memory foam mattresses offer support and comfort without the bounce of an innerspring mattress.

Not all memory foam is created equal. Some are more supportive than others. Determine the thickness of the foam and its density. The thickness, which can range from 2” to 6,” will determine how far down you sink into the foam.

Density will determine the quality of the foam. The higher the density level, the better the quality.

Somewhere In Between

Maybe you like a little bounce, but still, prefer some firmness. If your preference is somewhere in between, a natural latex mattress may be a good fit for you.

While more expensive, natural latex mattresses typically last longer – 20 years or more. Dunlop latex is denser and heavier, while Talalay latex has a softer feel.

What Is Your Sleep Style?

When choosing a mattress, you also have to consider your sleeping position.

Side Sleepers

If you sleep on your side, you want a mattress that will provide pressure relief while conforming to your body’s natural shape and supporting your weight.

A memory foam mattress or a soft mattress topper will provide the pressure relief you crave. An innerspring mattress may actually provide more relief than a latex or foam mattress.

Back Sleepers

If you sleep on your back, you’ll want a mattress that provides middle-of-the-road firmness. You need support, but you also want to ensure that your spine is kept in proper alignment.

Back sleepers tend to do well with most mattress types. It’s all about finding the firmness level that’s right for you.

Stomach Sleepers

If you prefer to sleep on your stomach, a firm mattress may be the best fit for you. Stomach sleepers need more support, so steer clear of memory foam, which will only cause you to sink and feel smothered while you sleep.

A latex or dense innerspring mattress will work perfectly.
