Here in the States, there is a word and a lifestyle that is becoming more and more popular. It’s called “prepper.” A prepper is a person who is preparing for a possible catastrophic event or emergency, which could be anything from a natural disaster to a terrorist attack. People who don’t live in the United States often find this odd, but even the government here encourages a certain amount of prepping for emergencies. You can see that here on ready.gov.
As with everything though, some people take it more to the extreme than others. I do a certain amount of prepping for myself and my loved ones, and I actually think it’s fun. My whole life doesn’t revolve around it like the people in the television show called “Doomsday Preppers,” but when I see a case of canned soup on sale for example, I’ll often pick it up to store in my prepper supplies. You never know you might need it, right?
In order to be a proper prepper, you have to do more than just store cans of soup though. You have to think ahead for the details. For example, you’ll have to remember that you’ll need to pack away a can opener to open the soup, and most importantly, you’ll need a safe place to sit and eat it. Once the soup is gone, what is your next plan for food? Are you prepared to grow your own? I could go on and on along this thread. As you see, it’s a whole mindset, and some people really, really get into it.
This infographic, which has a rather depressing title, is called The End Is Near: Doomsday Would You Survive? and it’s by National Geographic Channel. If you want to know more about being a prepper, this will enlighten you about the lifestyle. I really don’t understand why some people think this concept is so strange. We all try to keep extra batteries, flashlights and water on hand in case of an emergency, right? This just takes all that up a notch. If the day ever comes when you need this stuff, you’ll be happy you thought ahead enough to prepare.
