I remember earlier this year when the webcam recording that family of bald eagles in Iowa went viral. Back then we were all waiting for that third egg to hatch, and at any moment there were between 100,000 and 150,000 people watching the nest live. That experience taught us a lot about the behavior of birds, including how much they love and care for each other and their babies.
When I was a teenager, I rescued a sparrow that fell out of his bird nest the day he was born. I remember using the money I earned from babysitting to buy some squishy dog food. I made little balls of it and stuck it onto the end of a toothpick. Every two hours for an entire summer I put those toothpicks of food down the sparrow’s throat and dropped them into his stomach. That bird thought I was his mom, and he wouldn’t fly away once he was able to. He was my pet for about ten years.
It’s so endearing how the parents of baby birds work as a team to care for them. Environmental Graffiti recently published an article with 15 absolutely incredible photographs of baby birds at dinner time. I chose my favorite 8 to share with you here, but I hope you click over to the original article to see the entire collection. Nature is so beautiful!
