Rhinoplasty – often referred to as nose reshaping – is a form of precision cosmetic surgery to alter the shape and/or size of the nose. This is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures for men and women alike, dramatically altering the balance and proportions of the entire face.
Before undergoing nose reshaping or even attending a consultation, it is essential to ensure that you choose a specialist who is registered with the General Medical Council. They must also have extensive experience in this specific area of cosmetic surgery, with a proven track record and an established reputation.
Prior to the procedure itself going ahead, several consultations and examinations will take place. Measurements will be taken of the current size and shape of your nose, after which your surgeon will explore your expectations and explain what can be achieved.
This is also the time when potential risk factors and side-effects will be discussed, in order to help you make an educated and informed decision.
As rhinoplasty usually takes place under general anesthetic, you also need to provide a full disclosure of your recent medical history and any medications you take. Your eligibility and suitability for nose reshaping will be evaluated by the surgeon, who is ultimately responsible for deciding whether or not you are an appropriate candidate for rhinoplasty.
The specifics of the procedure will vary in accordance with the nature and extent of the surgery taking place. A typical nose reshaping procedure will be completed within 1 to 3 hours, during which your nose will be structurally adjusted for aesthetic improvement. There are three primary types of rhinoplasty performed by cosmetic surgeons:
Most types of nose reshaping surgery involve the use of dissolving stitches, which disappear on their own and do not have to be removed. Where traditional stitches are used, they will be removed manually around one week after the surgery takes place.
Recovery times vary in accordance with the nature and extent of the procedure performed. A certain amount of pain and discomfort as the anaesthetic wears off is to be expected, along with a feeling of congestion in the nose and sinuses due to swelling. Your surgeon will provide or recommend appropriate painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication where necessary.
These initial side-effects will usually dissipate within one or two weeks, during which time all types of strenuous activity should be avoided. An overnight stay at the clinic is often needed, so appropriate preparations and allowances should be made.
After being discharged, it is advisable to have a friend or family member stay with you for the first couple of days, as you may find it difficult to perform most everyday tasks during this time. In the unlikely event that you experience any excessive pain, bleeding, numbness, or swelling, you should contact the hospital and your surgeon.
All possible side effects that accompany the procedure will be disclosed and discussed during the initial consultation. Major complications are rare, with most side-effects being limited to the following:
Again, anything that falls outside these confines should be reported immediately to your surgeon. Most residual side-effects following nose reshaping surgery will usually dissipate within 1 to 2 weeks. Be sure to consult with a reputable surgeon, such as Samuel Mattine, before your procedure to confirm the best option to suit your case.
