State vs Federal Background Checks

Background checks can be performed on your nanny to make sure that she doesn’t have a criminal record, or you may need to have a background check as part of your employment. There’s a big difference between a federal background and a standard background check.

What’s A Standard Background Check?

A standard background check will include most of the information about you or another person. You can order an advanced background check that includes a lot of information, including:

  • Addresses
  • Criminal records
  • Court records
  • Driving records
  • Arrest records

You’ll have access to a lot of background information with a standard background check. Additional databases may be searched, too, depending on your needs. There are a lot of public background check services that are advanced and sophisticated.

Background checks may be performed by:

  • Individuals that want additional information on a person
  • Employers that want to dig into their potential worker’s past

Anyone can have a background check performed on a person. You’ll be able to find out a slew of information on the person, including driving records (important for the transportation industry), arrest records and even verify employment information.

What’s A Federal Background Check?

A federal background check is slightly different from a standard background check. These checks will include infractions on the federal level. If a person was involved in a federal crime, a federal background check will be ideal.

These checks will be able to identify a variety of crimes, including:

  • Kidnapping
  • Money laundering
  • Tax evasions

You may also find FBI background checks. The FBI offers one of the most extensive background checks in the industry, and the checks may include information on:

  • Credit history
  • Criminal record

An FBI background check will include a fingerprint check as well as security clearance. The FBI check is only required in the most serious of positions that will include national security positions where the person may be a government contractor or worker.

Some employees may require an FBI background check to be able to identify if an employee has any of the following on their records:

  • Felonies
  • Misdemeanors
  • Bankruptcies
  • Arrests

The government provides forms that will allow you to request a background check directly from the FBI.

Federal employment background checks are being used more often in sensitive employment positions, including working in a daycare center. These checks dig a little deeper into a person’s background check than a standard check with an emphasis on serious crimes.
