Artistic Sushi Rolls: Pop Culture Designs Created On A Sushi Canvas

We’ve featured so much fabulous food art over the years that it now seems natural to play with our food, or at least it does for me. Artistic expression can take on many forms, and when it’s embedded into the foods we eat every day, it makes us look at those foods differently forevermore. I love sushi. I’ve seen some incredible sushi designs in my life, but I’ve never seen any that look like this. This is sushi art using sushi rolls as the canvas.

Takayo Kiyota is a makizushi artist, which means she creates art with sushi. The interesting thing is, since the sushi is rolled up and cut into pieces, she never knows if it’s going to turn out like she expected until the end. That means she has to create the whole design in her head first, and then hope that when she cuts it, it looks like it did in her imagination.

In the pictures below, you’ll see a sequence of three sushi rolls that depict the development of an embryo. That is an especially advanced design since it all came from one roll. Depending on where you cut it, you get a different design. Who knew sushi could be such a useful pallet for creativity?

I was trying to decide which one of these sushi rolls below is my favorite. I think I’d choose the sushi iPhone. Takayo created that one as an homage when Steve Jobs passed away. I can’t even begin to imagine how she does this, but wow, she sure has some incredible skills. I’d love to interview her about how she got started in making her now famous sushi.
