One question that seems to be a popular one in the entrepreneurial forms is “How many times is too many times to keep trying?” It’s such a sensitive question, and since the answer can change the entire course of someone’s life, it’s not one to be taken lightly. I have been a full-time entrepreneur for around 13 years, and I can understand the sentiment behind wondering when enough is enough. It can be confusing sometimes.
Entrepreneurs are the ultimate optimists, and it’s easy to keep hoping. We hear phrases like “never give up” and “never let go of your dreams” which push us harder. I’m a firm believer that nobody knows what is right for you to do except you, but here are my thoughts on the topic.
First of all, I believe it’s about the journey, not the destination. If you are dreading the day-to-day work, and if you’re wishing success would be more instantaneous, you might have your answer. I believe that once you have the passion to become an entrepreneur, nothing can take that fire away. However, I also believe that some of the things we do are just stepping stones which allow us to reach higher on an even more rewarding journey. For some people, when they ask “when is it too many times,” it means it’s been too many times.
Look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself if you still have that passion and dedication. Do you still want to work hard to achieve your goals? Do you understand that all entrepreneurs battle hard times and periods when doubt feels like it’s eating them alive? Can you work through those feelings? If the answer is no, it may be time to move on. After all, Einstein says the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I wonder how many times he would say too many times is. If you decide it’s time to change directions, there is no shame in that. You are a perfect person just as you are, regardless of your decision.
However, if you look yourself in the mirror, ask yourself that question, and if you find that you still feel that passion inside you, I want to urge you not to give up! You can do it. Find a way to reinvent yourself. Make a plan A, a plan B and take it all the way to plan Z. You can make it work if you still feel the fire inside. So many people have been on the brink of success when they stopped. There have been countless examples of that presented to us all over the years. There is no such thing as “too many times to try” if you still feel the same level of commitment and dedication. Trust your gut and go for it again, and again, and again.
