Top 5 Essentials Every Husky Owner Needs

If we had to put a paw on the quirkiest dog breed of all AKC recognized and unrecognized breeds, we’d have to pat a Husky. The funniest, sweetest, and kindest of them all, the Siberian Husky is a wonderful addition to all families. Often referred to as “the nanny dog”, the Husky will adapt to any conditions, any lifestyle, and anyone. You know, as long as you leave the thermometer below zero.

All jokes aside, the Siberian Husky is truly a great pet, but even they need additional care. If you’re a first-time owner, and you’ve decided Husky is your ideal pet, then you should know that these dogs must have some essentials in their new home.

What are those essentials? What does your new Husky really need besides love and nurture? Here are our top 5 picks of essentials every Husky owner should know about and buy as soon as the little howler arrives at its new home.

1. Dog Food

Despite their large size and high activity, Huskies don’t need much food to survive. Back in the days, Huskies were working dogs staying with the Chukchi people in the Siberian Arctic. They didn’t have an opportunity to eat every day. They ate when the tribe caught something, or when they did the hunt themselves.

But, all of this doesn’t mean today’s Huskies aren’t demanding at all! Some Huskies can be so picky, they won’t even touch the food you serve them, no matter how great it is. Yup, they’re really drama queens and kings.

We’re aware you don’t want a spoiled Husky, but a dog has to eat something, right? Well, Huskies can’t eat just any food. With dog food or kibble being an essential you need when having a dog, you should check out Amazon and Chewy for amazing deals on best dog foods suitable for Huskies.

2. Dog Collars

Whether you don’t have a collar yet, or want a new one to upgrade your growing puppy, dog collars are a must. How else would you put on that unique dog tag? How would you attach a leash and head out? Huskies shouldn’t go out without a collar and a leash. Otherwise, they might wander off since they’re quite curious and love exploring. To prevent the call of the wilderness, you should get a sturdy collar for your Husky.

But, don’t think that buying just any collar will get you off the hook. Huskies have a thick coat and they need a wide collar, preferably made of real leather, to prevent chafing and hair pulling.

Wondering where to start? Well, how about right here?

3. Dog Bed

Obviously, right?

Dogs need a place to call their own. Since you’re getting a large-breed dog like a Husky, you shouldn’t let your dog sleep on any surface. Large dogs are prone to many bone and joint issues, i.e. hip dysplasia, or joint inflammations. If they sleep on surfaces that are too firm, that could trigger some of the bone diseases you wouldn’t like your pooch to suffer from. These health conditions are pretty hurtful and will limit your dog from everyday actions.

That’s why having a good dog bed is an essential part of owning a dog. Huskies should sleep on soft, orthopedic mattresses designed to support their back, neck, and spine. Beds should have at least one lifted headrest to allow the dog to rest its head. But, more on that here.

4. Dog Brushes

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Huskies? Yes, their eyes are quite mesmerizing, but think again. It’s their coat, of course! Husky owners say an average Husky sheds so much you can make a brand new dog out of its loose hair. But, you’ll realize that soon enough.

Huskies have a double coat, with a soft and fluffy undercoat and a coarse overcoat or guard hair. Not every dog brush will suit their needs. You will need to be thorough while grooming a Husky, otherwise, its coat will look kinda desperate. Regular grooming and brushing at least two to three times a week will reduce the amount of loose hair around the house.

Huskies should be brushed with an undercoat rake or a slicker brush. They’re both a terrific choice, but we’ve got even more excellent Husky brushes hiding right here.

5. Dog Toys

But, not just any dog toys. Huskies are known for their intelligence. Some of them even speak! Remember Mishka? Well, their intelligence can mean only one thing: you shouldn’t let them get bored. Ever. Boredom in dogs leads to destructive behavior, depression, and sometimes even aggression.

So, right when you pick up your new Husky puppy, head straight to the pet shop and let him or her choose some fun toys. We recommend puzzle toys that hide treats. They’re excellent picks that not only relieve boredom, but also stimulate mental development.

What’s important is to keep the toys rotating. Don’t put out all of the toys at once, otherwise your Husky will get bored of all of them easily.
