US vs. UK: A Freelancer Paycheck Comparison

Being a freelancer can sometimes be very stressful, and if you don’t keep up the discipline, you will find that your freelance career is quickly going to be over. It’s a process that has to be maintained, polished and looked over each and every day. For people who believe that weekends are holy, then I would say that freelancing is not for you. Working long and odd hours is probably what freelancing is all about. The more you push into a day’s worth of work, the larger the paycheck will be at the end of the month, depending on whether or not you have work that is. Creating a portfolio takes time, and there is no rushing it. Just fumbling something together to have in your portfolio is not going to get you the trust and the long term clients that you really want in order to build a secure and successful business.

There is a difference in how much you will have to work in order to earn a living in different parts of the world. Making money can be easy if you know your stuff, but the size of that paycheck depends on where you are located in the world. As you might have figured out already, life isn’t fair and there is no getting around it. Submit Infographics put together a comparison infographic where they look at the differences between being a freelancer in the US as compared to the UK.

For all of you freelancers in the UK, I am sorry to have to tell you that you’re doing more work for a smaller buck. The reality is that being a freelancer in the US, or rather self employed, is far more profitable than it is if you’re located in the UK. I don’t even dare finding out what the differences are comparing Sweden to the US or even the UK, but it’s quite clear that UK people have to work harder for their living than people in the US. It’s unfair, yes, but that’s the reality, so all of us not living in the US really have to suck it up. One thing that location cannot change is the will to succeed. Where there is a will, there is a way. Simple and sound.
