I am quite sure that by now there is a tutorial, guide or recommendation for pretty much every single approach to social networking. We keep writing them, and to some people, that might seem like it’s a waste of time. The thing is that social networking is an ever changing landscape that requires us to stay up-to-date with the best practices. What was the right approach yesterday could possibly be a method that doesn’t work today. To keep growing and to keep finding new connections, which is what social networking is all about, you have to follow the technology and its features wherever it might be heading. Twitter accounts can go silent and Facebook pages can become echoing halls of loneliness if we don’t stay updated with the way they work.
There are still people out there who think social networking is a waste of time, and they keep busting their butts in order to meet their quota, whatever it might be. But if you are not using social media, and especially social networking, you are missing out on a huge chunk of business and potential collaborations that you just couldn’t hook up in the real world’s social events. J6 Design created an infographic, called 7 Reasons To Embrace Online Culture, that might help clarify the importance of using social networking.
It’s a relatively simple but powerful infographic that spotlights the importance of using social networking through a percentage point of view. There is a lot to gain when using social networking; however, there is much more to it than just setting up an account and hoping for the best. Social networking is all about networking, hence the name, and as long as you don’t network, you are not going to build any significantly influential following.
So, embrace the way that social networking is supposed to be used and reap the benefits. Each social networking service has its own approach to how you will actually interact with people, so don’t take it for granted that it works exactly the same across the board. What you can do is start with one service, the one that you think is best suited for your needs, and then when you have mastered that particular forum, you can move on to a second service. Interaction with people will make them notice you and start listening to what you have to say. So basically, approach social networking for what it is and network, interact and make sure people know that you are interested in building a collaborative friendship with them, whether it be to share creative inspiration or actually do business together.
