Blunders In Social Media History [Infographic]

Throughout the years, Twitter has been a place for instant updates and news. People can instantly make sure their entire following knows what they are doing, and it only takes a few keystrokes. It’s the ultimate way to build a following, we know that. However, it is also a very dangerous tool to wield. If you are not careful, depending on the size of your following, you can dirty up your reputation in seconds. Believe me, it has happened more than once on this mega network that instantly connects people. A simple sentence can easily turn into a global catastrophe for a brand or even someone’s image. There are of course plenty of ways to prevent this from happening, but regardless, blunders will always happen in this day and age.

Twitter has had its own share of blunders over the years, but it’s been nothing compared to what some people have been able to stir up. It seems that blunders usually happen when people are either stressed or too eager to tweet something. There are also blunders that happen when people think they are sending a private message, but they in fact send that tweet out to their entire following. Bad mistake.

A fresh infographic from MDGadvertising provides a list of the top 8 blunders committed on Twitter throughout the years, and it is nothing less than hair-raising to read through it. I mean, some people just don’t think before they tweet something. What this infographic says is that it’s almost too easy to completely destroy a brand or a personal image which literally took years to build up. All it takes is a distraction, stress or ignorance and the blunder could be a fact.

I am sure these examples won’t be the last time we see a well known brand or personality accidentally tweet something that should have never been tweeted. The funny thing is that a dedicated following is usually not as forgiving as you would think. However, one thing that is quite clear is that if you want to make good with your following again after a potential blunder, make sure you don’t take yourself too seriously, and be sure to apologize.

Have a look at this infographic called Social Media Blunders and learn from other people’s mistakes. It only takes a thought to determine whether you should send an update or not. It’s not rocket science. Sometimes a little factual research is necessary as well, but usually it comes down to pure common sense. It’s funny how people forget all about common sense when they are stressed or want to make a point. Don’t fall into that trap. The only one you will be hurting is yourself or your brand. There’s no way around it. But at the end of the day, what you tweet on your Twitter account is of course entirely up to you. This is just a little reminder about what could happen.
