Addicted To Words: Ultimate Online Copywriting Guide [Infographic]

Often times people ask me what a copywriter is, and I usually tell them it’s exactly what it sounds like, a person who writes copy. In other words, if you are a consistent blogger with regular readers who enjoy checking out what you write about, you are probably very experienced in the art of online copywriting. Most of the time when the term “copywriter” is used, it implies that the writer is a professional, but I consider anyone who is addicted to writing words a copywriter.

Online copywriting is a little different than traditional copywriting, but overall, it’s still the art of making your words delicious and irresistible to read. You can always tell when someone is skilled at online copywriting because you actually want to read all the words in his or her blog post. For me, when that happens, it’s such a treat.

There are three things I want to mention about online copywriting before I introduce you to this infographic below. First of all, this wouldn’t be an ultimate guide to online copywriting if I didn’t mention SEO. I intend to write a separate article about how to include SEO copywriting into your posts while still writing for your reader (not just for the search engines), still being natural and still being effective. It’s not just about stuffing your page full of keywords. I think that is where a lot of people get all janked up on this aspect of it.

It’s important to do the keyword research for your post before you start writing. It’s a critical step in the process which in my opinion should never be overlooked. Once you have chosen the word or phrase you’d like to use (based on several different things), you can work it naturally into your post without it being awkward or dodgy. If you have to force it in there, it’s not the best keyword. Also, know your density. There is a fine line between not including the keyword enough and including it too much. The density is very important. Of course, all of this only applies to online copywriting.

The second thing I want to mention is the issue of humor. Some people are able to be so funny in their blog posts, and you giggle every time you read something they write. Others try to be funny, but it just don’t quite work. And others don’t even give it a go. I would like to suggest you read 2 Reasons Why It’s Tricky To Translate Humor Online if you’d like more info about that.

The third thing I’d like to mention is that the quality of online copywriting is as important as offline copywriting. Some people get sloppy when it’s online, and I’m not sure why that is. For example, you would never publish a book without crediting proper sources for images or certain facts. Why do people often leave those things out of their blog posts? I suppose those are more fundamental things to include and not the actual online copywriting, but I still thought it was worth bringing up.

I looooove online copywriting. I have written 2,773 blog posts here on Bit Rebels since 2009, and it never gets old to me. It’s like anything else though – Some days you are on and some days you are off. The point is, you never stop. That is the key in my mind. You just write and write and write. This is the first of 6 blog posts I plan to write today. If you love writing as much as I do, if you do it often, and if you are always trying to learn about words and make your use of them more effective – You are a copywriter! This infographic simply called The Copywriting Infographic by ABC Copywriting pretty much tells you everything you’ve ever wanted to know about both traditional and online copywriting. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
