There was a time a few years ago when I would have called myself and most of my online friends social media addicts. We were on Twitter pretty much all the time, and I even slept with my phone so I could check my tweets during the night. A lot has changed since then, and I’ve come to the realization that it is more important to be productive during the day than socialize on Twitter all day. It was just a personal decision brought on by a serious case of social media burnout.
However, with that being said, I will always remember that time in my life as being very special. I am still on social media every day, I’m just not as engaged as I used to be. I don’t think social media addicts are like psychopaths. Give me a break. But this infographic called Is Social Media Making Us More Like Psychopaths by WhoIsHostingThis? is still cute.
According to this, social media addicts lie, they’re antisocial, they’re self obsessed and they exhibit worrying behavior (like cyber bullying). The most interesting thing this infographic says is that 51% of people say social media has not changed their lives for the better. Do you agree with that? Hmm…
There is a corresponding blog post called Is Social Media Turning Us Into Psychopaths? which is actually very interesting. I agree that social media addicts interact with the offline world differently than those who aren’t on social media much. There is no question about that. I know that from experience. The question is, since there is no long term data about how this affects our health and well being, will we come to regret this type of online lifestyle in 20 years from now, or will we be even more plugged in then? I guess only time will tell.
