IFTTT: A Solution For Flawlessly Connecting All Our Social Networks

Advancements in technology have revolutionized society in too may ways to count in the last decade. From smartphones to social media, everything has become faster, smaller, thinner, and better. Our lives are so ingrained in various devices nowadays that it’s hard to imagine life without them. It’s as if our lives are automated by technology, leaving no facet untouched.

Perhaps the most important of these services are the social networks. You’re more than likely already on something like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, or one of the many others that serve a specific function. In fact, its probable that you’re on multiple social networks. It’s not uncommon in today’s world to have a Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, etc. You name it, and you’re probably on it. Yet, as great as these networks are at connecting users with other users, they face a more potent and underlying problem – Connecting to other networks.

Linking together all of your social networks to work in harmony is a pain. Many of them, aside from simple functions such as reposting or managing contacts, do not sync well, if at all. However, there is a solution, and it’s called IFTTT. IFTTT is an acronym for “If This Then That.” It is a web-based solution that allows you to connect a multitude of Channels (aka social networks), and work in ways never imagined before. With over 50 Channels, ranging from staples such as Facebook and YouTube to lesser known ones like App.net and Yammer, IFTTT lets users set triggers on one Channel that activates actions on another Channel.

The best way to describe the ingenious potential of IFTTT is through an example. Lots of people these days use the extraordinarily popular Dropbox and Instagram. With an IFTTT account, through their simple set-up process, you can set Dropbox to backup every picture you upload to Instagram. All of it happens automatically in the background, so once you set it up, you won’t have to worry about it ever again. You could even do things like have IFTTT send you SMS messages directly to your phone when the weather forecast doesn’t look great. Really, the possibilities are endless. If you’re too lazy to be bothered with creating your own “Recipes” (as IFTTT calls them), there is a compiled list of hundreds (if not thousands) of pre-packaged actions available to the public. The array of choices is astonishing, and all it takes is the click of a button. So what are you waiting for? Head on over, check out the Recipes, and get cookin’!
