3B Printing Project: 80,000 Bees Make Whiskey Bottle Out Of Honeycomb

The combination of nature and technology is interesting, yet sometimes bizarre. A few weeks ago we featured a Silkworm 3D Printer which used the thread of silkworms in the production of ‘3D printed’ creations. It was an impressive innovation. Today I’d like to share another printing project that used animals for its success. These 80,000 bees 3D printed (or 3B printed if you want to be cute) a Dewar’s bottle out of honeycomb. Well, they 3D printed it in their own way.

Dewar’s calls this their 3B printing project, and it’s actually part of an elaborate way to promote their new Highlander Honey whiskey. All it took to make this work was some creativity, 80,000 bees, and some plastic molds. The bees formed their honeycomb inside the plastic molds. The mold themselves are already formed into the correct shapes. The one you see below is a Dewar’s bottle.

I can’t help but wonder, how do the bees know what they’re supposed to do? How do they complete their role in this project so easily? Animals, or in this case, insects, are so intelligent sometimes. Dewar’s will soon be posting a documentary of this whole printing project on their Facebook page soon. If you want to learn more about this, you can connect with them there.

If you watch the video below, you’ll see all these bees in action as they create their masterpiece. I don’t think I would have wanted to be the one in there messing with them while they were hard at work. I know that guy is wearing thick gloves, but still. Imagine getting stung by 80,000 bees. No way! You have to admit, this is a very creative way to promote honey whiskey. It almost makes me want to try it.
